Alonso on pole in Hungary

Massa, struck by debris, will not race

Renault's Fernando Alonso took his first pole of the season in Hungary, besting the Red Bulls to put himself in prime position on a track where qualifying first often means victory.

Q3 was delayed for 22 minutes after a big crash involving Felipe Massa. What is believed to be a piece of suspension work from Rubens Barrichello's Brawn came loose and struck Massa in the helmet. The Ferrari subsequently went into the turn 4 wall.

Medics removed the Brazilian, who was later airlifted to a hospital. Ferrari confirmed he will not race tomorrow. The Associated Press reports he has skull damage and will require surgery.

The Red Bulls of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber start second and third. Lewis Hamilton, fast in practice all weekend, including the final morning session, starts fourth.

The best championship leader Jenson Button could manage was eighth in his Brawn, while teammate Barrichello starts 13th, the suspension failure putting an end to his challenge.

Rookie Jaime Alguersauri will start 20th after his Toro Rosso slowed to a halt in Q1.
