Lewis Hamilton put McLaren in front Friday in cool, occasionally wet conditions at the Nurburgring, posting a 1:32.149 to kick off the German Grand Prix weekend.
Mark Webber had set the fastest time in practice 1 with a time of 1:33.082, ahead of Jenson Button and Felipe Massa. Teammate Sebastian Vettel's morning ground to a halt with mechanical issues.
But Vettel was back in action for the second session, finishing second to Hamilton and edging rival Button, who finished third. Webber ended the session fourth.
