Hamilton leads first day at Spa

Lewis Hamilton continued McLaren’s renaissance, taking top spot in Friday practice for the Belgian Grand Prix.

F1 Grand Prix of Belgium - Practice

The Briton topped Toyota’s Timo Glock in the second session. Kimi Raikkonen was third in the Ferrari.

Rain more or less scuppered the first session, with Jarno Trulli leading things on a dry track before the rain started to fall. Jenson Button was second for Brawn GP and Fernando Alonso third for Renault.

But it was not a day for the title contenders. In the trend-setting (dry) afternoon session, Mark Webber managed a fourth, but teammate Sebastian Vettel was tenth, and Button and Rubens Barrichello were 17th and 18th. Both teams will be looking for drastic improvements tomorrow.

Of course, how much of Vettel’s performance was due to engine conservation (he skipped the first session) is up for debate.

Times remain close, which should make for an interesting session tomorrow, and at Spa, weather is sure to play a factor.
