Schumacher penalized out of the points

Michael Schumacher was penalized by the stewards for overtaking Fernando Alonso while the safety car was out in Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix.

The stewards, joined on this occasion by Damon Hill, assessed a drive-through penalty resulting in a post-race 20-second addition to the German’s time, dropping him to 12th in the results.

Formula 1 GP Monaco

Schumacher was ruled to be in violation of Article 40.13 of the Sporting Regulations:

“if the race ends whilst the safety car is deployed it will enter the pit lane at the end of the last lap and the cars will take the chequered flag as normal without overtaking.”

Mercedes will appeal. Don't miss the top stories of the day, subscribe to the SpeedRead Web newspaper now! -- Email SpeedRead -- Learn more about author C.D. Six
