UPDATE: Kubica out of surgery, now it's wait and see

Adam Cooper reports Robert Kubica is now out of surgery.

In a stroke of good fortune, locally-based Italian hand surgery specialist Prof. Igor Rossello was involved. He is apparently an expert in the field. According to Cooper, Rosello told the Italian media “We have to wait at least a week to see if his hand survives” and that it could take a year to rehab.

Treatment was overseen by Lotus Renault GP Dr. Riccardo Ceccarelli.

James Allen talked to a hand reconstruction specialist about such an operation, while Joe Saward pieces together some of the details of the accident.

It is difficult to speculate at this time, however, it seems likely Kubica will miss a significant portion of the season.

Saward reports team boss Eric Boullier said it is not appropriate to talk about stand-ins at this time.

For now, we send our best wishes to Robert Kubica for a speedy recovery.

UPDATE: Kubica's hand saved, damage unclear

Adam Cooper reports:

“Unfortunately the impact with the guardrail caused serious harm. He has been diagnosed with multiple fractures to his leg and right arm, especially complications related to his right hand. We shall see later if the operation was successful. The clinical picture is not easy. We expect to make the necessary assessments tonight.”

“The surgeons are trying to restore the functionality of his right hand. We must now think about the muscle function, but Robert has a very strong temper and will succeed.

“The important thing is that Robert recoveries, as it has already proven to do with the incident in Canada. On that occasion it took him three months to get back on track.”

- Daniele Morelli, Kubica's manager

Correction: In regards to Kubica's Canada accident, the quote should say the recovery took three weeks, not months.

Kubica injured in rally crash

Lotus Renault GP driver Robert Kubica, fresh off some hot times in Valencia last week, was injured Sunday in a high-speed crash at the Ronde di Andora Rally in Italy.

Kubica was airlifted from the scene and undergoing surgery. Sources say he suffered multiple fractures to his right arm, leg and hand, and was trapped in the car for more than an hour. His co-driver was unhurt.

A video from Italian television shows the aftermath of the wreck.

The Pole will be forced to miss the next test session and likely the start of the 2011 season.

Ex-HRT driver Bruno Senna would seem poised replace Kubica in the short term. Romain Grosjean is also on the books.
